HOW TO HANDLE YOUR "NON-BELIEVER" LISTENERS

You have non-believing / unchurched people listen to your station every day. Most experts say it's as high as one third of your audience! What do you need to know about them? -Rick McConnell

  • 44% OF AMERICANS ASSOCIATED WITH A NON-CHRISTIAN FAITH HAD INTERACTION WITH CHRISTIAN MEDIA IN THE PRIOR MONTH AND 1/3 DESCRIBED THEMSELVES AS EITHER "ATHEIST" OR "AGNOSTIC"
  • (37%) ADMITTED TO LISTENING TO SOMETHING RELATED TO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH.
  • 50% OF CHRISTIAN RADIO LISTENERS DON'T HAVE A CHURCH HOME.     - Barna Research

What you should know about non-believing listeners:1) Most found you by mistake. Most will tune out when they will find you are a Christian station. But MANY will stay out of curiosity.

 2) SOME people will search you out BECAUSE you are a Christian station. (This is important to know. The main point here is: they are looking for a message from you. Do you have one?)

3) A myth: Non- Believers will tune you out if you talk about God or act spiritual. The truth is that most will tune you out when they find out you are a Christian station and there is nothing you can do about that. However, many people will tune in deliberately because the WANT a message from you!

A personal note: The silliest thing I have ever seen is the trend to "hide" the fact that you are a Christian station-so that these non-believers will stay tuned in.Nonsense. They figure it out in about 5 minutes. They will either tune out because you are a Christian station. OR they will STAY because you are a Christian station. Celebrate your message. Don't hide it. -Rick

4) Biggest mistake you can make: Sounding unprofessional. The non-believing audience already has enough negative stereotypes about Christians. Don't give them any more ammunition.

Conclusion: Have a message here and there for the non-believer. And don't think the music will be your only message. (As some have recommended) If that worked, the Apostle Paul would have been a troubadour not a preacher.
